Wednesday 28th December a fine farewell to the kiosks
A big thank you to the Hidden Kiosks project for our 3 month stay. It has helped get The Bike Guru brand up on its feet and out there to the Colchester public.
Wednesday the 28th of December will be the last night that the Kiosks will be open until we find a new premises.
We will have live acoustic acts performing from 7 pm following the arrival of the bike ride cyclists who are Promoting the new Crouch Street cycle route that is due to open in the near future.
We even made friends with the fantastic group mentored by Chris (AKA Monkey) who breakdance outside the kiosks on Fridays at 5pm.
Come and join us to bid farewell to the Kiosks as The Bike Guru Café/workshop. We have enjoyed ourselves immensely and met some great friends along the way, we’ll see you all at the next chapter!!
Chapeau!
Tranquility in Firstsite.
It’s Friday, so I thought I’d pop to the neighbours to borrow some sugar. And as a true nosey neighbour would, walk on in and have a look around.
I heard a funny story the other day of a woman walking through firstsite, climbing her way through as she suffered from vertigo. With the floor styling and wall combo, it does look somewhat odd as you pear through.
It feels claustrophobic as you walk looking for pennies, but as you raise up, there’s a certain openness to the design of the building. As I sit in the window, watching over the tops of the houses in New Town, there is a certain peace attached. With the phenomena of all the winter sunshine baking through the window, it feels euphoric.
One thing that baffles me is, (this may sound prejudice) but the walls of hoarding make the place feel as if it’s separating itself from the actual people. So it’s free entry in here, but the walls of metal are a huge deterrent and even from afar make the place look closed / uninviting.
The space in here is lovely. It does have a relaxed feel so you can go and find out more as to the goings on in here, or just find a pew and relax / reflect in peace and quiet.
If you haven’t had a proper look around, you should. It’s free so you’d be a fool to miss the chance. The current pieces in the University space are amazing. Mexicano Lithographs that tickle me every time I see them.
They are even representing the bike culture with a couple of bronzed HERO bicycles. These are traditionally very cheaply made in factories across India and shipped out to the poor countries and sold at extortionate prices to the locals. They do however reflect this irony in their casting. Lovely job.
Chapeau
Tonight at the Café
We’re showing of Colchester’s own Dan Warburton and others tonight on Colchester’s smallest stage. He was our first act on our opening Wednesday night. Great acoustic sounds with a cheeky charm.
For a little taster of what’s to come, why not check out his MySpace page, maybe download some of his music? It’s FREE!!! or like him on Facebook.
He’ll be playing from 7pm, so get here in good time. Fresh coffee and cakes will be available and now we have outside heaters and blankets, there’s no reason to keep yourselves indoors on a fresh midweek evening.
In other news, the workshop is now open Monday to Saturday 9-5, so you can now get great service any time you have problems with your steed or just wanna pop down for some friendly advise on maintenance or riding around Colchester.
See you there!
Chapeau!

Building blocks on a Tuesday.
We will be closed on Tuesday the 6th December so we can plan the next steps for the guru’s presence in Colchester. As most of you know, we only have the kiosks on a 3 month, pop-up shop basis. The creative coop hooked us up with the hidden kiosk project 3 months ago and we won it for the maximum amount of time. This time is quickly running out.
So we can get all of our new plans together, we have to get our heads around our slight issue of premises and funding to offer all the cool social change ideas we have for the future. We chose this Tuesday to get as much done as possible. We’ll let you know how we get on as the days pass. Any ideas on where you think a Café like ours would fit in Colchester are very welcome. You can either leave us a comment on here, find us on facebook: (search – The Bike Guru), twitter: @_thebikeguru_ , or just fill out our contact form with suggestions.
See you on Wednesday for our coffee surprise.
Chapeau!
The sun is shining!
It’s beaming down on the shop this morning. Who says summer’s over…? Perfect weather for a ride down to say hi and check your bike for the winter months.
I’m still in shorts so there’s absolutely no reason to pass off the mass ride tonight. Probably gonna need lights still and hi vis if you’ve got it.
We’ve got ‘a bits blue for t’lads’ with our XXX mints. Kit Kats are back in. A host of sarnies and of course the legendary coffee cake.
The workshop is getting in a load of mini wheeler components to trick out your twentys. White walls and bull horns. Only a few anodised bells left. Get em while they’re hot!
Chapeau my Colchester champions!
See you tonight for the tour and live
music from 7!
